Hiring Transgender Actors for Transgender Roles

25 Sep

A recent article by Nick Adams, the director of GLADD’s (formerly known as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Transgender Media Program, was spot on! GLADD holds the media accountable for accurate representation of the LGBTQ communities. Mr. Adams notes,  “— in spite of the critical and commercial success of projects that put trans people front and center — Hollywood is having a very difficult time letting go of the idea that putting a male actor in a dress, wig and makeup is an accurate portrayal of a transgender woman.”

I invite you to read Mr. Adam’s article here! It’s not enough to put out a movie depicting the lives of LGBT folks- Transgender actors and actresses SHOULD be portraying those roles themselves!!

Hi! I disagree. At this point, ANY sympathetic character that the public might embrace to get them thinking about loving trans, is fine with me. I was very impressed with Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl, and were it not for the actor ‘Eddie’, I’m not sure so many people would have seen the movie; to consider the obstacles trans people face. And if that’s chasing dollars, I will call it chasing hearts. We need to get as many people possible into this discussion, and I’m a-ok with Jeffery Tambour to Matt Bomer. Just carry our flag, we’ll take it later. Thanks for the write-up! Trans mom Lisa

Hi lisa644, I totally get your point!! I also want badly for trans stories to be told and viewed by as many folks as possible! But, I also hear Mr. Adams’ concern: at what point are trans actors sought out and employed instead of continually having cis-gendered folks “dress up and portray”. We just need to be aware how long we are willing to wait!!
