BEWARE OF FALSE CLAIMS!

4 Feb

In a support group to which I belong, someone asked about “rapid-onset gender dysphoria”. One of our parents shared this important information:

This is NOT a real term. Instead, it is meant to sound official and medical. This is being used to scare parents and everyone out there into believing that we are being too quick to in taking teens’ expression of gender seriously.

THIS IS HARMFUL PROPAGANDA! Gender dysphoria is NOT a phase or due to peer pressure!

Please also be aware of terrible propaganda videos from the “American College of Pediatricians” which is a actually a conservative anti-lgbtq hate group that sounds official. It is NOT official! This is NOT the “American Academy of Pediatrics”.

The American Academy of Pediatrics supports and believes in the appropriate treatment for children on the gender non-conforming and transgender spectrum.

Don’t be sucked in and misled! Continue to listen to your children! Follow your heart!

My son is 26 and married. He phoned us last night to tell us he is trans. We were very surprised to say the least. Three weeks ago he phoned to tell us he has ADD. He said his doctor told him to find a psychiatrist for further help and medication for the ADD. While talking about this he mentioned he had issues with depression and anxiety that had been ongoing for some time.
He works full time and goes to school part time. He has not found a doctor for his mental health issues.
Now he tells us he is trans. I’m sick. I’m angry. I want to shake him and make him find a doctor right now! He lives 2500 miles away, is an adult, is married and no longer my baby boy. I have no “power” over him. He has to decide his own life. But it’s killing me!
    He’s always been impulsive.

Mina- I think every individual/child is different. I can absolutely understand why you are worried that this is not an accurate representation of your son. After all, he has MULTIPLE issues: depression, anxiety and impulsivity. He ALREADY has a great deal that he is dealing with. His huge challenge is that are these other conditions, indeed, complicated by a further diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria, or has the Gender Dysphoria been exacerbating his other issues??

These are COMPLICATED medical and emotional health issues….this is a long road for all of you!! You are in such a tough spot as you live so far away and, as you say, he is an adult.

Please hang in there…he is going to need your strength and encouragement (rather than a verbal shaking and exasperation!) to take the positive steps he needs to become healthy! He is a complicated and tortured soul…he needs your CONTINUED love, support, gentle guidance, and empathy!!!
My best to all of you!
